Introducing The Flip
Introducing The Flip, the editorial-style podcast exploring more contextually insights from entrepreneurs around Africa.
My name is Justin Norman - I'm the producer and host of show. I'm also an American expat, who's lived in Johannesburg, South Africa for the past two years.
In my pursuit of entrepreneurial endeavors on the continent, I learned very quickly that my "western" upbringing and experience left me not knowing much about operating in South Africa and beyond. My entrepreneurial education, aided and abetted by Silicon Valley-style thought leadership, was not contextually relevant for this market, its nuances or its complexities.
I needed a new frame of reference, which led me to conversations with practitioners across the continent, and those conversations turned into a podcast - The Flip.

Introducing The Flip
We're flipping the script
My first recorded interview was with Sayo Folawiyo, the co-founder and CEO of Kandua, and he enjoyed the experience so much he proclaimed himself executive producer and b-mic.
I've spent a lot of time digging deeper into some of the pervasive narratives on entrepreneurship in Africa - on customer acquisition, on market size, on expansion, on recruiting, on issues of deal flow versus availability of capital - and have explored these insights in the context of general prevailing sentiment on entrepreneurship, which often comes from Silicon Valley.
But if Silicon Valley insight isn't always applicable in this context, shouldn't we be using different models? And learning from more relevant sources?
We're flipping the script - exploring alternative narratives on African entrepreneurship, and challenging the applicability of Silicon Valley thought leadership.
